OF THE DAY. MY MOST VIVID MEMORY OF THIS BIKE IS BEING TRAPPED UNDER THE EXHAUST PIPE WITH SHORTS ON. IT TOOK YEARS FOR THE
SCAR TO GO AWAY.
ONLY THE BMW R65 IS A PICTURE OF THE ACTUAL MOTOCYCLE I OWNED

THERES NO BETTER WAY TO LEARN THE WORKINGS OF A MOTOR THAN BUYING A BRITISH BIKE. MY TIGER CUB IMMEDIATELY WENT INTO OFF
ROAD DUTY. FOR EVERY 20 HOURS RUNNING THERE WAS 8 HOURS REPAIR. I WAS ALWAYS A HIT WITH THE GUYS AT THE LOCAL MOTORCYCLE
PARTS DEALER. THEY USED TO COMPETE IN HILL CLIMBING WITH SIMILAR TIGER CUBS YEARS BEFOR MY ACQUISITION. PARTS BECAME HARD
TO
GET AND EVENTUALLY A VALVE GUIDE SPRING RETENION WASHER BECAME THE REASON IT WENT INTO A BOX. I LATER GAVE THE BIKE TO MY
WIFES (THEN GIRLFRIENDS) BROTHER.
IT WAS NEVER SEEN AGAIN, I THINK IT HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH JUNK WEEK.

IF YOU READ ON, YOU SEE A PICTURE OF A BMW 1800 CAR. MY 1800 RAN INTO A SERVICE PROBLEM AND IT STARTED TO LOOK LIKE LONG TERM
GARAGING
WAS TO BECOME ITS FUTURE . MY GIRLFRIENDS UNCLE HEARD OF THE PROBLEM AND OFFERED TO TRADE THE CAR FOR HIS BMW R50 S. I JUMPED
ON THE OFFER. I REALLY LIKED THIS BIKE AND WISH I STILL OWNED IT TODAY. THE TROUBLE WAS THAT IT LEAKED OIL OUT OF THE LEFT
HEAD, RUINING A BOOT OR TWO OF MINE. THE IMAGES OF THE TIGERCUB CAME BACK TO MIND WHEN I CONSIDERED DOING THE REPAIR. SO I
SOLD THE BIKE TO A VERY HAPPY CUSTOMER

DESIRING TO OWN A NEW MOTORCYCLE AND HAVING LIMITED RESOURCES (PUTTING MY SELF THRU SCHOOL) I WENT FOR THE REASONABLY PRICED
SUZUKI. IT REMINDED ME OF THE TRIUMPH; A SINGLE CYLINDER THUMPER. I SOLD THE BIKE AFTER 2 YEARS AND USED THE CASH TO START
AN ARCHITECTURAL PHOTO BUSINESS.

AH THE R65, SOME SAY THE BEST AIR HEAD EVER MADE BY BMW. MINE WAS A 1978 IN CHAMPAGNE BROWN . I HAD TOURING BAGS PUT ON WHEN
I PURCHASED HER AND EVENTUALLY INSTALLED A WINDSCREEN AND TANK BAG. THIS MOTORCYCLE RARELY CAUSED ME A MOMENT OF CONCERN.
WE DID MAJOR TOURING / CAMPING ON THE R65. I LEARNED TO PACK UP THE BAGS FOR BOTH OF US FOR A TWO-WEEK TRIP. MOST OF THE TIME
I OWNED THE BIKE I DID NOT HAVE A CAR. FELT I WAS DOING
MY PART FOR THE ENVIRONMENT. GAS MILEAGE WAS INCREDIBLE.I TRADED HER IN TO BUY THE R1100RT. AFTER 13 YEARS I GOT MORE THAN
I HAD ORIGINALITY PAYED FOR IT.

SEEMS THAT TWO GUYS HE WORKED WITH WERE STARTING TO SELL THESE MINIBIKES PART TIME. HE BROUGHT HOME THE BROCHURE TO SEND OVER TO MY COUSINS HOME. WELL, I LET HIM KNOW THAT I WAS VERY MUCH INTERESTED IN SUCH A RIDE AND IF HE THOUGHT IT WAS OK FOR MY COUSIN THEN IT ONLY FOLLOWS
. I WAS IN MY 7th YEAR AND MY PAPER ROUTE MONEY WAS BURNING A HOLE IN MY POCKET. OF COURSE MY BROTHERS AND I HAD BEEN BUILDING HOMEMADE MINIBIKES AND GO KARTS ALMOST FROM THE DAY WE DISCOVERED THEY EXISTED. |
