This link will direct you to an on going
story about an adventurer on a trip of a lifetime.
The gentleman is Hubert Kriegel. Hubert (U-BEAR)
is an expatriate from France who been living
over here 15 years. I met him on the street
in New York City fixing his R100PD with sidecar,
curbside. The bike was leaning clutch side down
flat to the ground with the sidecar perpendicular
to the roadway. I took one look at this guy
and said to myself... " This one I need
to meet" So I cross the street and strike
up a conversation. Now Hebert Speaks with a
heavy French accent and I'm a fast-talking northeasterner
and the result of my introduction was that Hubert
thought trying to put him down. I said something
like "what are you planning to do with
this machine?" I could see that he had
a fully prepared bike for long distance travel
and assumed that he be into telling me of his
exploits. Instead He thinks I was making fun
of him for having a fully equipped machine and
uses it for putting around the city. So he comes
back with " You know, When I need some
grocery, this is my way to get from here to
there. I walk to the back of the ride and spot
his plate ADVTUR and I know he pulling my leg.
So I try again "You planning any long trips?"
He
comes back With "Yes, I plan to ride to the Arctic Ocean." This time
he thinks he got me; you know like your green and why are you troubling me. At
that time I was helping another friend (Remus) get ready for an adventure of his
own. (Remus road from NYC to the Arctic Circle in Alaska and then down to the
tip of South America and back.) And So I told Hubert that he has got to meet Remus
Before he takes off on his trip.
Who should walk of the Shoe store across
the street at that very time? Yes Remus. Believe me New York is a big city and
that was a chance in a thousand.
Any way I get to know Hebert better and
find out he has been on many trips of challenges.
Back in the 1960th he and his brother where
the first riders to circumnavigate the Red Sea.
They in fact road from Paris, France to the
Red Sea and back. Take a look on a map to see
what kind of a trip that is. And these guys
where only in there twenties.
Hubert
also sent a lot of time racing Hacks in Europe, where it a popular sport.
So back to the story, It turns out that ride to the Arctic Ocean was planed
for mid winter when the ice roads are open. NOW here's a man with a hunger for
our passion. It took a few years of delay for Hubert to set off, butt now he has
gone and done it. If one of you ask why he doesn't he just take a skidoo, Your
off the board!! By the way, prior to taking off on this trip north, Hubert sold
his apartment and the things that went in it, because he plans to keep riding
for the next 10 years. That right on the road for ten years!
The
before mentioned web site will document this travels. I will post every and any
thing he sends my way. I hope you will follow along and enjoy the adventure with
us. Make sure you come back to look in a few weeks when it starts getting cold.
GOOD LUCK TO THE KRIEGEL
